Additional Lesson Options

Chinese Online Lessons give you the opportunity to learn Chinese with us even if you cannot commute to our center in New York City. Students can attend Chinese classes through the comfort of their own home using a handheld device or a desktop / laptop computer. We have options for students to take Chinese with us either in a private lesson format or a group lesson format.

For private lessons for online students, we arrange a schedule like we would with regular Chinese private lessons, matching the student availability with the teacher's. We usually skype or zoom for online Chinese lessons but there are other programs that we are also open to using.

There is also an option for taking Chinese group classes in NYC through online.  What will happen is, subject to availability, you might be able to take any one of our group classes listed under the group class section by joining remotely. We'll setup a computer with an HD camera that allows students to interact with their classmates and teacher, like they would in a regular face to face group class. We'll also administer assessments via online and send any relevant homework for the classes.

Please CONTACT US  for more information on the online classes.

Hills Learning is next to multiple businesses that are headquartered near Grand Central Station in New York. We've worked with multiple companies to offer language lessons for corporate employees. Since we are a fully accredited institution, it is usually easier for prospective students to get reimbursement for their classes through us.

For classes for business at Hills Learning you can choose to take classes here through our regular group class offerings, or sign up to private Chinese lessons where we can tailor the curriculum to fit yours and your company's needs. We can teach Chinese and formal business Chinese, or just go through regular language acquisition for clients.

There is a possibility for classes for business purposes to come and teach at your office. We also have classrooms available at our Grand Central location (usually business hours 9 to 5 are open, after hours you'd need to contact us).

Please CONTACT US  for more information on our business programs. We look forward to hearing from you and discussing your business needs.

Hills Learning offers courses for credit for Chinese. Since we're a fully accredited institution we have the ability to partner with either a college, university or high school to put together a program for transferring credit.

How the program works is you'd contact Hills Learning and ask about our programs for credit, mention that you're interested in learning Chinese. We'd then need to speak to a school administrator from your host school to see what their requirements would be for credit transfer and then discuss how either taking a group and / or private class here would help fulfill those requirements.

Taking classes for credit at Hills Learning is a great way to take your language of choice and have it count for credit. Too often we see schools not having Mandarin Chinese classes, or, not having the specific level of the target student.

Please CONTACT US  about the Chinese classes for credit.

Hills Learning offers Chinese classes for kids. Our regular programs on our website are for adult students (except where noted) so if you're interested in classes for your kids to learn Chinese we usually teach kids in a private or a semi-private setting.

All classes for Hills Learning students are generally recommended to take place at our center, however we do also have the opportunity to send teachers to student homes for teaching. We understand especially with younger kids it's sometimes difficult to commute to our center.

Our lessons for Chinese for kids teach with a specific curriculum that is fun and engaging. We usually teach with videos, songs and interactive activities for the students to learn Chinese. We do teach Chinese characters, but depending on your child's age, we might start out with vocabulary and grammar only.

Please CONTACT US  for further information on our Chinese classes for kids.

Student Testimonials - Chinese

  • My teacher is an awwwwwweesome teacher! Energetic, encouraging, engaging and prepared. One of the things that attests to her skill as a teacher is her ease of balancing students of different skills and encouraging the student to talk around words they can't recall. I'm very fortunate to have her!

  • I've been looking for a basic kick-start to get confidence up to learn mandarin. I now have some understanding and can try and talk with wife's family in Taiwan.

  • The teacher was great! I've studied many languages in many different formats and I really think that this was the quickest I've picked up an understanding of the language. If we weren't pronouncing something correctly, she would have us repeat it until it was correct and was very patient in doing so. She was also able to explain why we were having problems pronouncing such as where our tongue and teeth were placed. That was really helpful! It was also helpful to repeat the tones during every class without learning the meaning of the words so that you really focused on the tone and not remembering the word. I think the conversations that we learned were helpful for the general beginners class and the teacher told us any other phrases that we wanted to know based on why we were learning the language. She gave me tons of extra phrases for my specific job, which was awesome!

  • My teacher is an excellent instructor who was able to satisfy all my expectations when I enrolled in my Chinese class. She provided me with a great platform to understand and assimilate the tonal requirements of the Chinese language much, much better than books and audio recordings could do.

  • It was a good experience to get back into the language - basically what I was looking for. The homework is lengthy, but I am learning from it and it doesn't feel like a waste of time. I especially liked learning grammar structures during class time.

  • As a bloody beginner in Chinese it seemed overwhelming at first, but now after two weeks I am beginning to get into the groove a bit better. I actually have simple Chinese sentences in my mind while riding the subway – happy about it

  • Beginner Chinese course at their Grand Central location was wonderful. The native-speaker teacher guided our (small) class so as to keep from getting off-track too often. She also included cultural notes and was very accessible outside of class via e-mail. There was light homework, since the class was only twice a week there was plenty of time to complete it, and the only penalty for not completing it was your own detriment. She spent a lot of time on pronunciation, going around the room to give each person a chance to pronounce the words out loud, which was very helpful!!

  • I have been studying Mandarin Chinese with Hills learning for a year now. During that time, learning has been slow and steady. I'd say we completed about a college semester's worth of Chinese language in that time, which is a perfectly reasonable amount of progress given the limited time investment of just one 90 minute class each week (plus homework). Class sizes are small, which helps the teachers really focus on each student's individual needs. Speaking of the teachers, they all seem to be native speakers, which is really important for a language like Chinese, where the pronunciation can be challenging for non-native speakers.

  • I took one-on-one Mandarin classes and I really enjoyed working with her as well as with the Hills Learning staff. The classes were tailored to my specific needs and learned a lot in quite a short time. Dealing with the Hills Learning staff was always swift and highly professional. It was a great experience working with the Hill's Learning team and I can only recommend their language classes!

  • " '20 Expressions' " that you absolutely have to have to travel in China" is a perfect first language experience to inspire you to want to (a) visit China; and (b) be unafraid to speak a few basic words of Chinese once you are there. I highly recommend the class for business people and students who might want to study Chinese, but are afraid that the sound system might be too difficult. Chinese is certainly different than the languages Americans study in school, but that difference need not be a barrier. I suspect that were Hills to package this course and market it as the title suggests it would chase more people to your programs -- largely because it's a confidence builder!

  • I didn't know how to learn Chinese first, but she taught us our weak point and told us how to make it! So she considered about us a lot and could enjoy in the class a lot. I could have more confidence than before. Thank you for everything!!

Private Classes for Adults

Chinese is without a doubt the “buzz language” of the 21st century. Schools are scrambling to offer it, businessmen are trying to learn it, and China politically is becoming an ignorable face on the world stage. Whether your reasons to learn Chinese are professional or personal, private lessons are a great option to develop your communication skills in Chinese.

Hills Learning’s curriculum for Chinese comprises both language and cultural instruction. For each class, we follow our SWIRL methodology, developing at least three of the five language skills per class. Our main goal for Chinese private lessons is to develop conversational skills, but we also specialize in test prep (HSK and others), cultural etiquette, business, or just general language acquisition.

Within this basic framework, Hills Learning’s staff develops curriculum and assessments based on student needs and goals. Private lessons are a unique opportunity for students to learn Chinese at their own pace.

Private Classes for Teens and Kids (Chinese Tutoring)

Are you interested in having your child learn about the Chinese language and culture? Maybe your child wants to eventually travel to China or study abroad?

Hills Learning offers a unique opportunity for kids learning Chinese in private lessons. We can not only teach them the basics of the alphabets, reading, writing, and conversation, but it’s also possible that the classes your teen is taking with us can be transferred to their respective high school or college for credit.
